Abstract
The article focuses on the importance of managing emotional culture—defined as the shared feelings and emotional expressions within a workplace—in addition to the more commonly addressed cognitive culture of values and behaviors. Research shows that emotional culture significantly impacts employee satisfaction, burnout, teamwork, and organizational outcomes such as financial performance and absenteeism. Examples from companies like Vail Resorts, Cisco Finance, and Censeo illustrate how emotions such as joy and companionate love can be deliberately cultivated to enhance workplace culture, while negative emotions like fear can undermine performance. The article also outlines methods for assessing and shaping emotional culture through leadership modeling, emotional contagion, and strategic emotional expression, emphasizing that senior leaders play a critical role in establishing and sustaining the emotional norms that support organizational goals.
