Abstract

The article discusses the introduction of a statutory barring scheme for senior NHS leaders, aimed at enhancing accountability and public protection within healthcare governance. Currently, there is no dedicated regulatory framework for managers in the NHS, unlike the existing regulations for nurses and doctors. The proposed scheme seeks to empower the Health and Care Professions Council to enforce higher standards of professional conduct, particularly in light of recent leadership failures that have harmed patient care and eroded public trust. The article emphasizes the importance of involving nurses in shaping this regulatory framework, ensuring it is fair, adequately resourced, and responsive to the complexities of healthcare environments.
