Abstract

This article focuses on the implementation and evaluation of a 7-week clinical placement for an entry-level Master of Science (MSc) Physiotherapy student supervised by an advanced physiotherapist practitioner (APP) in paediatric rheumatology. The placement combined traditional physiotherapy supervision with APP-led experiences, exposing the student to advanced practice roles including clinical decision-making under medical directives, communication with physicians, and involvement in research, education, and leadership pillars. While the student met expected benchmarks for entry-level physiotherapy skills, challenges arose due to limited student independence—attributable to the non-delegable nature of APP medical directives—and the lack of standardized APP role definitions, which complicated expectation setting. The report suggests that integrating APP placements into physiotherapy curricula may enhance student awareness of advanced practice roles and support clinical education, but recommends clear communication and structured evaluation to address inherent challenges.
