Abstract
The article focuses on the resurgence of polio as a global health risk, particularly in regions with low vaccination coverage. Since the introduction of vaccines, polio incidence has decreased significantly, yet wild poliovirus (WPV) remains endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where various socio-economic challenges hinder vaccination efforts. Additionally, circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks have increased due to low immunization rates, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) aims for eradication by 2026 through enhanced vaccination strategies, community engagement, and improved surveillance, including the deployment of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) to bolster immunization efforts.
