Abstract

The article examines the decline of public health in the United States and its implications for societal well-being and democracy. It traces historical advancements in public health, particularly since the establishment of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1946, which significantly improved life expectancy and disease control. However, recent trends show a decrease in vaccination rates and a rise in infectious diseases, exacerbated by political polarization and a growing distrust in health institutions. The article warns that the erosion of civic responsibility and communal health efforts could lead to dire consequences for the nation’s future, drawing parallels to historical pandemics and the fall of the Roman Empire.
