Abstract
A recent study conducted by researchers at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China has confirmed a case of Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker (GSS) disease with mental disorders as the initial symptom. GSS is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cerebellar ataxia. The patient, a 54-year-old female, initially presented with an unstable gait and was previously misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. Genetic testing revealed a heterozygous mutation in the PRNP gene, confirming the diagnosis of GSS. After two months of traditional Chinese medicine treatment, the patient's walking instability improved and emotional fluctuations decreased. This case highlights the importance of considering GSS as a potential diagnosis in patients with mental disorders and ataxia symptoms. [Extracted from the article]
