Abstract

This scoping review examines recent physical activity (PA) interventions targeting African American (AA) women, focusing on their characteristics, outcomes, and gaps related to health and wellness. Eleven peer-reviewed studies from 2019 to 2024 were analyzed, revealing that most interventions emphasized increasing PA through group-based activities, education, and culturally tailored approaches often grounded in social cognitive theory. While improvements in PA levels and self-efficacy were commonly reported, none of the interventions comprehensively assessed functional wellness domains—such as movement quality, behavioral health, sleep, or nutrition—nor consistently measured health-related quality of life. The review highlights the need for future interventions to incorporate holistic wellness assessments and sustainable, varied community settings to better address the multifaceted health needs of AA women.
