Abstract
This article focuses on the impact of the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act of 2022, which prohibits hair-based discrimination against Black women in workplaces, schools, and other settings, on their mental health. A scoping review of 15 studies published between 2019 and 2024 found that hair discrimination contributes to anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, and lowered self-esteem among Black women, but no research has directly measured the CROWN Act’s effects on mental health outcomes. The review highlights the need for longitudinal and quantitative studies to evaluate how the CROWN Act may alleviate psychological distress by reducing discrimination. While the act offers important legal protections, further empirical research is necessary to assess its effectiveness in improving mental health and to support broader policy advocacy.
