Abstract

This article focuses on the neurocognitive functioning of patients diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in low- to middle-income countries (LMIC), where healthcare access and disease management are limited. Through a systematic review of 18 studies primarily conducted in African, Middle Eastern countries, and Brazil, the research found that individuals with SCD often exhibit lower neurocognitive performance compared to non-SCD controls. Common assessment tools included the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children or Adults, though cultural and language adaptations of these measures were infrequently reported. The study highlights the need for further research on the validity of neurocognitive assessments used in LMIC populations with SCD.
