Abstract

The article focuses on research-backed strategies for supporting employees with chronic mental illness in the workplace beyond immediate crisis intervention. It highlights that at least 20% of U.S. adults live with chronic mental illnesses such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and bipolar disorder, which require ongoing support tailored to fluctuating symptoms. Key findings emphasize the importance of enabling employees to develop personalized, bitemporal coping routines—short-term strategies for managing acute symptoms and long-term strategies during symptom-free periods. Employers can facilitate this by fostering supportive workplace relationships, offering flexible work arrangements, and providing access to diverse professional mental health resources. The article underscores that removing barriers to these supports helps employees with chronic mental illness thrive both professionally and personally.
