Abstract

This article focuses on the clinical presentation and evolving antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of enteric fever in children from a tertiary care hospital in North India. The prospective study of 88 pediatric cases found that enteric fever often presents with nonspecific symptoms, including respiratory complaints, and that resistance to first-line antibiotics like ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin is increasing. Conversely, older antibiotics such as ampicillin, cotrimoxazole, and chloramphenicol demonstrated renewed effectiveness, suggesting their reconsideration in treatment protocols. The study highlights the importance of local antibiotic sensitivity data for guiding therapy and notes the need to revisit vaccination strategies given the high prevalence in older children.
