Abstract
The article focuses on the importance of equipping managers with mental-health first-aid skills, particularly using principles from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to support employees experiencing emotional distress in the workplace. It highlights that while many managers receive physical first aid training, few are prepared to address mental health challenges, despite rising anxiety and depression among employees, especially younger generations. The article outlines a practical CBT-based ARC model—Acknowledge, Respond, Change—that managers can use to recognize signs of distress, engage empathetically, and help employees reframe negative thoughts and behaviors without acting as therapists. Emphasizing confidentiality and appropriate boundaries, it encourages managers to facilitate supportive conversations and connect employees with professional resources, aiming to foster a more understanding organizational culture.
