Abstract
The article focuses on assessing awareness of Lassa fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic illness caused by the Lassa virus and transmitted primarily by the Mastomys rat, among rural dwellers in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey of 150 respondents, the study found that while general awareness of Lassa fever was high (80%), knowledge of its specific symptoms, causes, and preventive measures was moderate to low. Key sources of information included town criers, mass media, and health workers, highlighting the importance of culturally appropriate communication channels. The study recommends intensified health education campaigns in local dialects, community engagement, and incorporation of Lassa fever education into school curricula to improve prevention and control efforts in rural Ebonyi State.
