Abstract
This article focuses on a 2022 European study examining the psychosocial work environments of aircrew—pilots and cabin crew—and their associations with mental health and fitness-to-fly safety behaviors. Conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Solna, Sweden, the study identified four distinct psychosocial profiles among 4,960 pilots and 1,684 cabin crew, finding that less favorable work environments correlated with poorer mental health outcomes (including depression, anxiety, and fatigue) and reduced safety behaviors such as self-disclosure of unfitness to fly. The research highlights organizational factors like guaranteed pay, roster influence, and collegial support as potential intervention targets to improve both occupational health and flight safety. Funded by Trafikverket, the study offers practical insights for addressing psychosocial risks in European aviation. [Extracted from the article]
