Abstract

The article focuses on a neonatal case of Enterovirus A71 (EV‐A71) infection presenting with unique symptoms, including palmar–plantar erythema and abdominal distension with umbilical protrusion, which are not commonly associated with this virus. The 23-day-old male neonate, who had a sibling diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), exhibited fever and poor feeding upon admission. Laboratory tests confirmed EV‐A71 infection through multiplex PCR, and the infant's symptoms resolved within a week. The case highlights the need to consider EV‐A71 in differential diagnoses for neonates with sepsis-like symptoms, particularly when presenting with features similar to those of Human parechovirus type 3 (HPeV3).
