Abstract
This article from Publishers Weekly features various individuals involved in the creation of a book about the Dance Theatre of Harlem and its first-generation ballerinas, known as the Swans. The author, Karen Valby, expresses her motivation for writing the book as a gift to her daughters and a way to inspire young Black girls who are dancers. The art director, Linda Huang, discusses the challenge of designing the book cover to capture the elegance and beauty of ballet while featuring all five dancers. The literary agent, Barbara Jones, notes that the copyright and proceeds of the book are shared between Valby and the Swans, which is somewhat unusual in the publishing industry.
