Abstract

This article examines the relationship between Black adults' consumption of Hip-Hop culture and their critical consciousness, defined as awareness of social systems impacting their lives and the motivation to engage in social change. Drawing on cultivation theory, the study surveyed 243 Black individuals in the U.S. and found that increased consumption of diverse Hip-Hop cultural forms (e.g., music, television, books) is positively associated with higher critical consciousness, with self-efficacy—belief in one's ability to effect change—partially mediating this relationship. Demographic factors such as gender, age, and education did not significantly alter these outcomes. The findings suggest that Hip-Hop culture may serve as a meaningful conduit for Black audiences to develop sociopolitical awareness and resilience, potentially supporting liberation efforts and community empowerment.
