Abstract
This article focuses on community water fluoridation (CWF) as a public health intervention to prevent dental caries. The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) reaffirms its support for CWF as a safe, effective, and cost-saving method that delivers fluoride equitably to large populations at an optimal level of 0.7 mg/L. The statement synthesizes nearly 80 years of scientific evidence demonstrating CWF’s role in reducing dental caries prevalence, promoting oral health equity, and lowering treatment costs, while noting that dental fluorosis is the only known adverse effect, typically mild in the U.S. The article also highlights ongoing research needs and emphasizes the importance of monitoring safety and improving public communication about fluoridation.
