Abstract
The article focuses on a coordinated assault by an al-Qaeda affiliate and separatist rebels in Mali, which resulted in the death of Mali's defense minister, Sadio Camara, in a suicide attack on his home near Bamako. The Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and the Front de libération de l'Azawad claimed responsibility for attacks across multiple locations, including Bamako, Kati, Kidal, Gao, and Mopti. These attacks are part of a long-running insurgency that began in 2012 and continues despite military efforts. Mali's junta-led government, led by General Assimi Goïta, has struggled to control the violence and has increasingly relied on Russia's Africa Corps, which began withdrawing from Kidal in late 2023 following an agreement with rebel groups.
