Abstract

This article investigates the impact of cultural proximity (CP) on tourists' festival perception (FP) and destination image, focusing on the Lusofonia festival, an annual Portuguese cultural event in Macao. Using questionnaire data from festival attendees, the study finds that CP positively influences FP, cognitive destination image (CI), and affective destination image (AI), with FP and CI serving as partial mediators in these relationships. The findings highlight that cultural festivals like Lusofonia enhance destination image by fostering emotional connections through shared cultural attributes such as heritage, gastronomy, and handicrafts. The study suggests that tourism managers should align festival and destination branding with tourists' cultural expectations and experiences to maximize social, cultural, and economic benefits.
