Abstract

Katerina Lagos's book, "The Fourth of August Regime and Greek Jewry, 1936–1941," provides a comprehensive historical analysis of the relationship between Greek Jewry and the Greek state and society during the Metaxas regime. The book argues that the treatment of Jews during the deportations should not be seen as a culmination of their treatment under Metaxas, as the regime's stance toward Jews was actually more favorable than previous governments. Lagos explores the historical context of Jewish-Christian relations in Greece, tracing it back to the Greek Revolution and the Ottoman practice of placing Jews and Christians on an equal footing. The book offers a deep and comprehensive view of the complex history of Greek Jewry during the Metaxas dictatorship and sheds light on the unique dynamics of Jewish life in the Greek lands.
