Abstract
This article focuses on the lived experiences of widows affected by the long-standing armed conflict in Kashmir, exploring the multifaceted violence, social exclusion, psychological trauma, and coping strategies they face. Based on in-depth interviews with 12 widows, the study reveals that these women endure physical, verbal, and sexual abuse from both security forces and family members, alongside denial of inheritance rights and social stigma rooted in patriarchal norms. Despite these challenges, widows employ various coping mechanisms including religious faith, engagement in daily chores, and reliance on social support, while some also experience depression and suicidal thoughts. The research highlights the urgent need for inclusive interventions at local and state levels to address the marginalization of widows and promote their empowerment within Kashmiri society.
