Abstract

The article focuses on the evolution and contemporary practice of United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations, tracing their origins from early conflict resolution efforts through the League of Nations (LoN) to the present-day UN framework. It outlines the foundational principles of UN peacekeeping—consent of the parties, impartiality, and non-use of force except in self-defense or mandate defense—and describes how peacekeeping has expanded into multidimensional operations involving military, police, and civilian components. The article further explains the integration of various UN entities and collaboration with regional organizations under the principles of subsidiarity and complementarity, supported by subsidiary organs such as commissions, expert panels, and international tribunals. It highlights the UN's adaptive strategies in addressing complex conflicts worldwide, emphasizing coordinated peace support operations, peacebuilding, and humanitarian assistance within a legal and institutional framework established by the UN Charter.
