Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges executives face in transitioning from a directive leadership style to a more empowering, people-centric approach required at the CEO level. Based on a study of 75 CEO successions involving 235 candidates, the authors identify this transformation as a three-stage journey—departure, voyage, and return—requiring humility, self-awareness, and resilience. Key practices for successful adaptation include creating new learning contexts, enlisting trusted advisers, learning from setbacks, and leveraging small wins. The development of people skills such as collaboration, influence, and self-evaluation correlates with improved organizational performance, highlighting their critical role in effective leadership today.
