Abstract

The article critically examines the Israel-Palestine peace process, arguing that its longstanding focus on a two-state solution has obscured the fundamental goal of mutual self-determination for both peoples. It highlights how the prevailing framework fragments the Palestinian political community and enables Israel's de facto dominance, thereby undermining Palestinian national rights. The author advocates for reimagining Jewish self-determination in Israel/Palestine to accommodate Palestinian rights on equal terms, proposing consociationalism—a power-sharing model recognizing distinct national groups—as a more viable approach consistent with international law. The article also distinguishes between the concept of Jewish self-determination and the practices of "actually existing Zionism," emphasizing the need to reconcile Israeli Jewish national aspirations with Palestinian self-determination in a manner that respects both communities' rights.
