Abstract

A Saudi-led group of Arab states is proposing a renewed plan for Palestinian statehood in an effort to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. The plan, which builds on the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, aims to create a Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders and includes measures such as rolling back Israeli settlements in the West Bank. While many European states have embraced the proposal, the US has been more hesitant, viewing any deal for the Palestinians in the context of its goal to forge diplomatic ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia. The Arab states believe that acceptance of their proposal is the ultimate goal, but challenges remain, including Israeli resistance and the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
