Abstract

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met in Addis Ababa to restore relations after a yearlong feud caused by a deal between Ethiopia and a breakaway Somalia region. The rapprochement was brokered by Turkey, leading to an agreement to restore full diplomatic representation and enhance cooperation between security agencies to combat extremist militant groups in the region. The leaders also discussed Ethiopia's continued contribution of peacekeeping troops to counter al-Qaeda-linked insurgents in Somalia, a move previously objected to by Mogadishu due to the disputed pact with the northern enclave.
