Abstract
The article focuses on the reduction of the annual US-South Korea joint military drills, known as the Freedom Shield exercises, amid efforts by South Korea to ease tensions with North Korea ahead of a planned visit by then-US President Donald Trump to the region. The scale of the drills has been more than halved, with 22 field training maneuvers compared to 51 the previous year, though South Korea states the exercises continue as planned despite regional conflicts such as in the Middle East. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has criticized South Korea’s diplomatic overtures and reiterated his push for nuclear development, rejecting US demands for denuclearization before dialogue. The article also notes ongoing uncertainty about the potential redeployment of US military assets from South Korea to the Middle East. [Extracted from the article]
