Abstract
In bringing others together, the Danish and Czechoslovak pursuit of scientific internationalism speaks to the ability of small states to seek "societal shelter" (knowledge and skills not indigenous to the country) from international partners. Scholars studying small states have long been engaged in the unending pursuit of a "holy grail" definition of what constitutes a small state. Thus, many small states have adopted postures of neutrality, signalling the desire both to stay out of conflict and to leverage that orientation for strategic ends. [Extracted from the article]
