Abstract
This article discusses the growing threat posed by North Korea to peace and stability in the region. It highlights the regime's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile development programs, as well as its confrontational posture. The author argues that efforts to convince North Korea to relinquish its nuclear status through negotiations will be fruitless and suggests a new approach focused on forcing Pyongyang to choose between regime survival and nuclear weapons. The article also mentions the challenges of denuclearization and the possibility of pursuing interim steps or arms control discussions with North Korea. It discusses the potential challenges and implications of pursuing talks with North Korea on goals short of denuclearization, including the elimination of economic sanctions and the U.S.-ROK alliance. The text further explores North Korea's decision to abandon its policy of dialogue and reunification with South Korea, and the forging of a new partnership between North Korea and Russia. It suggests that North Korea has provided military aid to Russia, including artillery shells, which has enabled Russia to sustain offensive operations in Ukraine. The article also highlights the importance of China's alliance with North Korea and its role in maintaining influence and balancing Russia's efforts. It concludes by suggesting that the US should respond vigorously to Pyongyang's actions and establish stronger international sanctions on North Korea, while also focusing on convincing the regime that nuclear weapons will only bring its demise closer.
