Abstract
The article discusses a study by Juana Moriel-Payne that examines the participation of subaltern groups in the religious and civic culture of Nueva Vizcaya, specifically in Hidalgo del Parral, from the mid-sixteenth to the early nineteenth century. The author utilizes municipal and parochial archives to argue that marginalized communities engaged with Catholic rituals to assert their presence in the city's cultural life. The study highlights the role of local religious brotherhoods, or cofradías, in organizing public celebrations and navigating issues of race, class, and faith. It positions Parral's unique geographical context as a space where these groups could interact with Spanish Baroque culture, contributing to a broader understanding of the diverse cultural dynamics in New Spain's northern frontier.
