Abstract

This brief research note considers a possible adaptation of a formula available from the Bacchic-Orphic gold lamellae (attested on OF 476 Bernabé and OF 484 Bernabé, and reconstructed for OF 475 Bernabé) at Aeneid 6.123. The consideration of this adaptation adds another entry into the catalogue of textual allusions to the tablet formulas already identified in previous scholarship, offers additional evidence for reading a cultic subtext behind the katabasis of book 6, and enriches our understanding of the heroic characterization of Aeneas at a crucial turning point in the poem by prompting a reappraisal of his divine parentage.
