Abstract

The article focuses on a pilot collaboration between a college of nursing and a department of dramatic writing at a research-intensive urban university to integrate the esthetic pattern of knowing in nursing through the creation of two short plays based on interviews with nursing students and frontline nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. This project aimed to enhance narrative competence, empathy, and reflective practice among nurses and playwrights by dramatizing authentic nursing experiences, thereby fostering a deeper public understanding of the ethical and emotional dimensions of nursing care. The collaboration involved nursing faculty, playwrights, and an artistic director, with professional actors performing the plays followed by audience reflections emphasizing virtues such as courage. The initiative highlights the potential of drama and humanities in nursing education to cultivate empathy, professional identity, and communication skills while promoting interprofessional partnerships grounded in cultural diversity and health equity.
