Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges faced by independent movie theaters in the United States from 2008 to 2019, particularly in the context of the Paramount Decrees and the evolving landscape of film distribution. It discusses the significant decline in the number of independent theaters, exacerbated by rising costs, the dominance of major studios, and the impact of streaming services. Independent exhibitors voiced their concerns during a 2018 public comment period regarding the necessity of the Paramount Decrees, arguing that the decrees were essential for protecting competition and preventing predatory practices by studios. The article highlights the systemic pressures that have led to the crisis in theatrical exhibition, emphasizing the cultural and economic importance of independent cinemas in their communities.
