Abstract
This article analyzes *Lady Sunrise*, a contemporary adaptation by Canadian playwright Marjorie Chan of Cao Yu's 1936 Chinese drama *Sunrise*. Premiered in 2020 at Toronto's Factory Theatre under director Nina Lee Aquino, *Lady Sunrise* condenses the original's large cast and dialogue into monologues performed by six Asian Canadian women in present-day Vancouver and Richmond, shifting the focus from 1930s Chinese class struggles to contemporary racial, gender, and class issues in Canada. The production notably features an all-Asian female cast and predominantly female creative team, reflecting significant developments in Asian Canadian theatre and gender representation in the post-#MeToo era. The adaptation reimagines male-dominated power structures as female-led, exploring themes of economic independence, exploitation, and intergenerational trauma within Asian diasporic communities, while employing innovative staging techniques to connect characters' narratives.
