Abstract

The article provides detailed live reviews of recent opera productions, focusing on performance quality, staging, and musical direction. Highlights include a production of Wagner's Ring Cycle featuring nuanced portrayals of power dynamics and strong performances by principal singers, supported by the Longborough Festival Opera Orchestra under conductor Anthony Negus. The Edinburgh International Festival showcased a semi-staged Mozart's Così fan tutte with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, praised for its vocal blend and lively direction, contrasted with a more problematic, cluttered staging of The Marriage of Figaro by Komische Oper Berlin. Additionally, Scottish Opera's promenade performance of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex offered an immersive experience with a community chorus and innovative staging. The Grange Festival presented Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea as a musically vivid but narratively complex production, alongside a compelling and detailed staging of Puccini's Tosca emphasizing dramatic intensity.
