Abstract

Kaplan offers several definitions of what he means by tragedy. Kaplan writes that 'the foundation of all tragedy is fate, which by definition is cruel'. At several other points in the book, Kaplan offers his own definition of the key concept of his analysis: 'tragedy, which finds meaning in all the horror of life, is a triangle formed by ambition, violence, and anarchy'.
