Abstract

The article examines the evolution of Black comedy in America, focusing on its trajectory from early minstrel-era performances to the 1990s sitcom boom and beyond, as explored in Geoff Bennett’s book *Black Out Loud: The Revolutionary History of Black Comedy From Vaudeville to ’90s Sitcoms*. It highlights Dave Chappelle’s career as emblematic of the tensions between mainstream crossover success and maintaining authentic Black comedic expression, noting his refusal to dilute Blackness for white audiences and his later departure from Comedy Central despite widespread acclaim. While Bennett frames Black comedy’s progress largely through its ability to break barriers and appeal to white audiences, the article critiques this view for overlooking the significance of comedy that primarily serves Black audiences outside mainstream platforms. It suggests that the full legacy of Black comedy includes both crossover hits and culturally specific works that prioritize Black perspectives on their own terms. [Extracted from the article]
