Abstract

This article examines the popularisation strategies used in the US legal drama *The Good Wife* to convey complex legal concepts to viewers, alongside the translation strategies employed in its Italian dubbed version. The study analyzes dialogues from 12 episodes, identifying that interactions between legal professionals primarily use denomination with minimal explanation to maintain realism, while exchanges involving laypeople incorporate a wider range of strategies such as definition, description, reformulation, and exemplification to enhance accessibility. In the Italian dubbing, translators prioritize creating plausible and audience-friendly dialogue over strict legal accuracy, frequently employing functional equivalence, paraphrase, calques, and occasional neologisms to adapt US common-law terms for an Italian civil-law context. The findings highlight the challenges of balancing legal authenticity, audience comprehension, and technical constraints in audiovisual translation, underscoring the importance of teamwork and legal expertise in training audiovisual translators.
