Abstract

The article discusses the importance of surprise in Greek tragedy and its impact on ancient audiences. While suspense and tragic irony are often emphasized in discussions of tragedy, surprise should not be overlooked. Ancient audiences, who were familiar with the myths and stories being portrayed, still enjoyed being pleasantly surprised by unexpected elements in new versions of these stories. The article explores examples of surprise in Greek tragedies, such as the use of different types of pots as stage props and unexpected entrances of characters. It also highlights the significance of surprise in the works of playwrights like Euripides and Aeschylus. [Extracted from the article]
