Abstract

"Transatlantic Radio Dramas: Antônio Callado and the BBC Latin American Service during and after World War II" by Daniel Mandur Thomaz analyzes the drama scripts written by Brazilian novelist Antônio Callado for the BBC Latin American Service between 1943 and 1947. The book sheds light on the functioning of the Latin American Service and the role of foreign intellectuals in producing original content for broadcasts in Spanish and Portuguese. Through archival research, Thomaz demonstrates how Callado's manuscripts included propagandistic themes suggested by the British government, focusing on critiquing authoritarianism and promoting pro-British sympathy. The book also explores how Callado's narrative skills developed during his time with the BBC, influencing his later literary works. [Extracted from the article]
