Drama in the Mess: Exploring Gender Norms through Story Drama in a Fransaskois School.

Abstract
This article investigates the use of story drama as an arts education approach to address gender and sexual diversity (GSD) with Grade 5 students in a Francophone minority-language community in Saskatchewan. Through a participatory action research (PAR) collaboration between university- and teacher-researchers, story drama activities based on the French translation of Belle Demont's *I Love My Purse* enabled students to critically engage with and question cis-heteronormative gender binaries prevalent in their community and children's literature. While the drama created space to challenge gender norms, students' tableaux predominantly reflected trauma narratives associated with gender non-conformity, and interviews revealed that the gender binary was often reaffirmed despite pedagogical efforts. The authors emphasize the importance of Francophone art and literature that positively represent gender and sexual diversity to support 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and foster inclusive imaginaries in minority-language schools facing social conservatism.
