Abstract
This article examines the role of cities as dynamic platforms for environmental activism and public communication through the lens of Kenneth Burke's dramatistic pentad, focusing on Greenpeace’s 2011 #VWDarkside protest in London. It highlights how urban spaces like London’s Silicon Roundabout provide material and rhetorical conditions that enable activists to stage performative, symbolic actions that engage both live and mediated audiences, amplifying environmental messages. The study situates the city as a critical forum for democratic dialogue and social change, emphasizing the interplay between physical urban environments, popular culture references (such as Star Wars), and strategic public relations practices in shaping environmental advocacy. It further argues that such urban activism exemplifies a “popular environmental dramatism” that leverages familiar cultural narratives to foster public engagement and policy influence within metropolitan contexts.
