Abstract

This study investigates posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) typologies among adults exposed to the 2003 Bam earthquake in Iran, 17 years after the event. Using latent class analysis (LCA) on data from 917 participants, four distinct PTSD symptom classes were identified, ranging from negligible to pervasive disturbance, characterized by varying levels of re-experiencing, avoidance, dysphoria, and hyperarousal symptoms. Significant differences in PTSD classes were associated with marital status, age, and having lost relatives in the earthquake, while gender and education showed no significant variation. These findings highlight the heterogeneity of long-term PTSD responses following earthquakes and suggest the importance of tailored mental health interventions for different survivor subgroups.
