Abstract

The G5 Sahel alliance, which was created in 2014 to combat jihadist groups in West Africa, is dissolving after three of its founding countries, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, announced their withdrawal. Chad and Mauritania, the remaining members, have respected the decision of the other countries and are taking steps to dissolve the alliance. The G5 Sahel has faced challenges in achieving its objectives, with limited joint operations and a deteriorating security situation in the region. The withdrawal of the countries from the alliance has also been accompanied by a shift away from former colonial power France and a focus on closer economic ties and mutual defense assistance among the Sahel states.
