Abstract
This article focuses on the diversity and distribution of large branchiopod crustaceans in the semi-arid region of Maharashtra state, India. A four-year survey across 29 sites documented nine species from four of the five orders of large branchiopods, representing the highest regional diversity recorded in India to date. Notably, the spinicaudatan Leptestheria jaisalmerensis was recorded for the first time since its original description over 60 years ago, extending its known range by about 1,200 km. The study highlights the presence of sympatric congeneric species assemblages and emphasizes the need for molecular studies to uncover cryptic diversity. It also underscores the conservation importance of these species, which inhabit threatened temporary aquatic habitats, and calls for their inclusion in regional Red Lists similar to practices in other countries.
