Abstract
The article discusses recent actions by Brazil's National Congress that have overturned presidential vetoes and enacted laws undermining environmental protections, which are argued to violate the Brazilian Constitution and international treaties. Specifically, the Congress passed the "devastation bill" and a special environmental license law that prioritize financial interests over ecological conservation, effectively marginalizing Indigenous and Quilombola communities in decision-making processes. These legislative changes are seen as detrimental to the Amazon's ecosystem and public health, increasing risks of zoonotic diseases and habitat destruction. A lawsuit has been filed with Brazil's Supreme Federal Court challenging the constitutionality of these laws, emphasizing the need for the court to reaffirm environmental and Indigenous rights.
