Abstract

At this time, Hurricane Idalia in the Gulf of Mexico was a Category 1 storm, prior to rapid intensification overnight to a brief Category 4 before making landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida as a provisional Category 3 on 30 August. The morning glory cloud is visible over the Gulf of Carpentaria, at this time stretching nearly 250km offshore including over the Wellesley Islands. The air then descends each night and, if a low-level temperature inversion is present, this can trigger westward-propagating atmospheric gravity waves across the Gulf of Carpentaria, generating a series of roll cloud formations as a result.
