Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing weather forecasting by producing lightning-fast and accurate predictions. Trained AI systems can now generate 10-day forecasts in minutes on inexpensive computers, matching or surpassing traditional models. Tech giants like Google and Huawei are competing to develop the most skillful AI models, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has started generating its own experimental AI forecasts. These AI models use deep learning to identify patterns in the atmosphere's natural evolution, and they have the potential to improve further and assist in climate modeling. While traditional forecasts will still be used, AI is becoming a valuable complement in weather prediction. [Extracted from the article]
