Abstract
The article discusses the mysterious atmospheric phenomenon known as STEVE (strong thermal emission velocity enhancement) and its accompanying green sidekick called the picket fence. Scientists are still trying to understand the physics behind these light shows, which have raised more questions than answers since they were first discovered by citizen scientists in 2016. The article explores the fine-scale structure of STEVE, its relationship to another airglow called a stable auroral red (SAR) arc, and the potential role of electric fields in creating the picket fence. Researchers are using computer simulations and proposing rocket missions to gather more data and solve the puzzles presented by these phenomena. [Extracted from the article]
